Overton’s 10-Under-Par 132 Ties USGA Mark, Earns Stroke Play Medal

Galloway Township , N.J. – Jeff Overton, 20, of Evansville , Ind., tied a USGA 36-hole record at 10-under-par 132 and earned medalist honors by seven strokes after the second round of stroke play at the 2003 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Blue Heron Pines Golf Club’s East Course.

With a 3-under 68 Tuesday, Overton, a junior at Indiana University , tied a USGA standard, which he shares with two prior Public Links medalists -- Jim Carter (1984) and Eric Labitzke (1999) and four medalists from other USGA competitions. In his first round, he shot 64 to tie for lowest round in 77 years of Public Links history.

.

“Too bad I didn’t make that 12-footer on the last hole,” Overton said with a smile when he learned of his record. He is playing in his first Public Links and his second USGA championship, the other being the 1999 Junior Amateur.

“It’s great. It’s awesome,” he said of winning the stroke play medal. “At least I can leave here with one great thing to say. But, records are there and then they are broken.”

Tuesday, Overton logged six birdies and three bogeys en route to his 68. He refuses, however, to become overconfident because of his play.

“I just want to capitalize when I possibly can,” Overton said. “And, there’s a lot of golf left. Hopefully, it will be awesome to win.”

Seven strokes behind Overton are Chris Wheeler , 20, of Pilot Point , Texas , and Brandt Snedeker , 22, of Nashville , Tenn. , at 3-under 139.

Just five players broke par during stroke play including 2001 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Henry Liaw , 17, of Rowland Heights , Calif. , and 47-year-old Joey Stansberry of Bloomington , Minn. , at 2-under 140.

Entering Wednesday’s first round of match play, Overton would have preferred to safely make the field of 64 and not play as the No.1 seed, saying: “Of course, you want to come in without anybody hearing about you. That way you can go out without pressure or nerves.”

He plays Marc Hocking , of Colorado Springs , Colo. , at 7:30 a.m. , the first match of the day.

Overton’s record-tying score accentuates a stretch of play over the past six weeks that includes a final-round 64 en route to a 12-stroke victory in the Indiana State Amateur, a second-place finish at the venerable North and South Amateur in Pinehurst, N.C. and birdieing three of his last five holes in APL qualifying to earn the lone berth to the championship at that site.

Chez Reavie, 21, of Mesa , Ariz. , who won the 2001 Public Links championship, came in at 3-over 145. Defending champion Ryan Moore , 20, of Puyallup , Wash. , finished at 6-over-par 148 and 1999 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Danny Green , of Jackson , Tenn. , was at 8-over-par 150.

The 36-hole cut came at 10-over 152 and six players participated in a one hole playoff for the final berth in the match play field of 64.

The second and third rounds will be contested on Thursday with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds on Friday. The 36-hole final is scheduled for Saturday.

John Thornton , 18, of Memphis , Tenn. , scored the fifth known hole-in-one in the championship, on the par-3, 182-yard 13 th hole with a 5-iron. It was his first career ace.

The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, for bona fide public course players, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.

The winner of the Amateur Public Links Team Championship is Norman , Okla. , represented by Chris Wheeler , of Pilot Point , Texas and Dayton Rose of Stillwater, Okla. The winning team receives custody of the Warren G. Harding Cup for the ensuing year and members of the team receive silver medals.
