Sam D. Kocsis

The run of California victories came to an end in the second playing of the event at the Coffin Municipal Golf Course, Indianapolis, Ind. Sam D. Kocsis, 35, of Detroit, defeated Tommy Bean, of Summervill, Ga., 2 up. The course had been considerably changed since the Amateur Public Links Championship was first played there in 1935.

The key club in Kocsis' bag was his blade putter, a hand-me-down from his older brother Chuck, a member of the 1938 and 1949 Walker Cup Teams and later runnerup in the 1956 Amateur Championship. With it, Kocsis eliminated the Champion, Gene Andrews, 1 up, in the semi-final round. Andrews progressed further in defense of his title than any Champion since R.L. Miller, of Jacksonville, Fla., who won in 1932 and was runnerup in 1933.

The team Championship was won by Miami for the first time with a score of 224. The entry, which had been declining since World War II, turned upward once again to 2,007. Following the Championship the Amateur Public Links Committee indicated a reference for a shorter Championship, a smaller number of qualifiers, and the restoration of a 36-hole qualifying round to determine 64 qualifiers for match play and the Team Championship.
