Daniel D. Sikes

Daniel D. Sikes, Jr., 27, of Jacksonville, Fla., a senior at the University of Florida Law School, defeated Bob Ludlow, of Indianapolis, Ind. 3 and 2 , at Silver Lake Golf Club, Orland Park, Ill.

Sikes previously eliminated Don Essig, III, of Indianapolis, the defending Champion, in the third round, 5 and 4, after Essig had won the qualifying medal with 71-71-144, two under par. Essig was the first defending Champion to take the medal since Carl F. Kauffmann, of Pittsburgh, in 1929.

Sikes was in the playoff for the last qualifying places at 155, and is the second Champion to have won his place in match play through a playoff. Willam M Welch, Jr. did it in 1941. The sectional team Championship was won by ST. Paul with a three-man score of 447 for 36 holes; it was the first victory for either of the Twin Cities.

The Silver Lake Golf Club was privately owned by John R. Coghill and was the third such course to be used, the Salisbury Plains Golf Club, on Long Island, site of the 1925 Championship, was owned by John J. Lannin, and the Ridgewood Golf Links, Cleveland, where the 1927 Championship was held was also a privately owned fee course.
