1968 Gene Towry
Gene Towry,
of Richardson, Texas, won the second Amateur Public Links Championship conducted
entirely at stroke play with a 72-hole score of 292 over the Tenison Memorial
Municipal Golf Course in Dallas.
Towry, an electrical engineer, once had been a professional and was
reinstated to amateur status before 1957, when he was runner-up to Don
Essig. Robert Unger, of Milwaukee, Wis., was second at 294. Verne Callison,
of Sacramento, Calif., and Michael Keck, New Orleans, La., tied for third
at 298. Towry was 12 over par for the four rounds with 18 hole scores
of 74-71-75-72.
