Robert Risch, 22, of Gardena, Calif., won the Championship by three strokes over Mike Zimmerman of Kettering, Ohio, over the demanding Cog Hill No. 4 Golf Course, Lemont, Ill. Risch had scores of 72-72-72-76-293.

Ted Meier, 18, of Joliet, Ill., led after two rounds with 69-73-142, then shot 85 in the third. Risch led by five strokes after 54 holes and never really was threatened in final 18. Later in the year he became a professional.

The entry reached epic proportions - 4,105, the largest for any USGA competition to that time.
