Fred Haney,
21, won by five strokes with a score of 290 at the difficult Papago Golf
Course in Pheonix in mid-July. Bob Blomberg, 26, of Alameda, Calif., was
second with 295, and four other players tied for third at 297.
They were Tom Olson, of Pheonix; Kenny Rucker, of Houston; Gary Balliet,
of Pontiac, Mich.; and Archie Dadian, of South Milwaukee, Wis. Dadian
was a former professional and the other three were college students. Haney
and Blomberg were tied at 220 after 54 holes and then Haney shot 70 in
the last round again 75 by Blomberg.
Haney had round 74-71-75-70-290, while Blomberg shot 77-72-71-75-295.
The entry reached 4,174, a record total, but for the first time since
1963 the entry for the Amateur Public Links was less than the entry for
the Open Championship. The 1971 Open entry totalled 4,279.
