Eddie Mudd,
of Louisville, Ky., defeated Archie Dadian, South Milwaukee, Wis., on the
first extra hole of their scheduled 36-hole final match at the Bunker Hills
Golf Course, Coon Rapids, Minn. Medalist was Jeff Thomas, of Boise, Idaho,
with four-under par 140.
Defending Champion Randyn Barenaba, of Hawaii, was beaten in the second
round by Arthur Fujita, also from Hawaii. Detroit, Mich., won the team
competition for the Warren G. Harding Trophy. Mudd, a 22-year-old college
senior, was 2-up on Dadian, 42, after 18 holes.
Dadian won the 20th and 21st holes to pull even and was 1-up with two
holes to play. Mudd then birdied the 35th hole to square the match and
they halved the 36th forcing extra holes. Mudd won on the 37th when Dadian
went two over par. Mudd was one over. A field of 4,015 filed entries.
