Jerry Vidovic,
20, of Blue Island, Ill., defeated Jeff Kern, Tucson, Ariz., 4 and 2, in
the final at the Brown Deer Park Golf Course in Madison, Wis. This was the
third time that the Amateur Public Links Championship was played at Brown
Deer Park.
Vidovic was co-medalist with Peter Jacobi, of Dayton, Ohio. Both scored
142 for 36 holes - even par. No one had been both Champion and medalist
since R. H. Sikes in 1961. Jacobi lost in the third round to Kim Hubbart,
of Spokane, Wash., 3 and 2.
Hubbard lost to Kern in the semi-final round. Vidovic defeated Spencer
Sappington, of Manchester, Mo., 4 and 3, in the other semi-final. Vidovic
played the morning round of the final in 70, one under par, and took a
3-up lead to lunch, In the afternoon he scored ten consecutive pars before
making a bogey at the 11th and a double-bogey at the 13th.
He still led by three holes. The match ended when Vidovic won the 16th.
The Tacoma, Wash., Team of C. Peter Niles, Jeff Baker, and Bill Gunderson
won the Warren G. Harding Trophy for the Team Championship. The entry
of 3,703 was well under the record 4,601 set in 1975.
