Bill Malley,
29, a truck driver from Hayward, California, defeated Dirk Jones, of San
Diego, California, 2 and 1, at the Indian Canyon Golf Course, in Spokane,
Washington. Jim Carter, of Pheonix, Arizona, was medalist with a record
132, eight strokes under par.
Carter led Pheonix to the team championships and the Warren G. Harding
Trophy with a score of 269. While Malley qualified at 145, Jones was two
strokes back, at 147. The final match was a test of Malley's patience.
He was three holes down on two occasions and did not claim the lead until
the 31st hole.
He closed out Jones on the 35th. The USGA accepted a record 4,814 entries
and 46 teams competed in the team competition.
