1989 Tim Hobby
Tim Hobby,
of Alvin Texas, caught Henry Cagigal of Fort Worth, Texas on the second
nine of the first 18 holes, the built a three-hole lead and won by 4 and
3 in the Amateur Public Links Championship.
He won the 14th, 16th, and 18th holes of the scheduled 36-hole match,
and went to lunch 3 up. He extended his lead to five holes on the first
nine in the afternoon, and Cagigal could get no closer than three holes
down.
There was, however, a marvelous contrast between the two finalists.
Hobby was one of the many collegians in the field. Cagigal is a waiter.
A senior at Baylor University, Hobby had attended the University of Houston
on a basketball scholarship. He had scored eight three-point goals in
one game, a record for the Southwest Conference.
His record was broken during the 1988-89 season. Cog Hill was equal
to its demanding reputation. Hobby was a combined 21 over par for 149
holes of stroke and match play. In the end, Hobby's putting skill led
him to the title. Still, he insisted, "I'm a better free throw shooter
than a putter."
