David Berganio, of Sylmar, California, took a commanding lead of 5 up after 27 holes and went on to defeat Brandon Knight, of Argyle, Texas, 2 and 1, in the 36-hole final match of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, played at Riverdale Dunes Golf Club, in Brighton, Colorado.

Berganio, who also won the APL title in 1991 and was the qualifying medalist this time, assumed a lead of 1 up after the first 18 holes. Then he birdied four of the next nine holes to grab a 5 up lead and never was seriously threatened the rest of the way.

More than 6,000 entries were accepted for the third consecutive year.
