Green
Fires Lowest Stroke Play Score in APL History
Maple
Grove, Minn. — Danny Green, 47, of Jackson, Tenn., fired the
lowest stroke play score in U.S. Amateur Public Links history Monday,
a 9-under-par 63, for a one-stroke lead at the 2004 championship
at Rush Creek Golf Club.
“Pretty good
for an old man,” said Green, the second-oldest player in the field.
“I

hit every
fairway and every green, which doesn't hurt. I'm in the books again
but I'd just as soon be the last man standing, though. They can
have all the 63s.”
Green, the
1999 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, who is playing in his 12th Public
Links, broke by one stroke the championship's previous 18-hole stroke
play record of 64, which was shared by three players. He also tied
the championship record by shooting a 6-under-par 30 in his first
nine holes. In addition, Green's total of nine strokes under par
tied the USGA amateur competitions mark for an 18-hole score. Chris
Mundorf shot 63 in the second round of stroke play at the 2001 U.S.
Amateur.
The USGA single-round
record is a 62 (8 under) by Christina Kim at the 2001 U.S. Girls'
Junior.
In his nearly
flawless round, Green, who was the runner-up at the Public
Links in 2001 and was a member of the 2001 USA Walker
Cup squad, logged seven birdies and an eagle.
“I didn't
think it would be a birdie fest, but I'm about to change my mind,”
said Green.
A total of
45 players broke par on the 7,132-yard, par-72 course.
Chris Stroud,
22, of Groves, Texas, who was the semifinalist in both 2002 and
2003, was a stroke behind Green at 8-under-par 64.
“He's a great
golfer,” said Stroud, a first-team All-American at Lamar University,
of Green. “People can mistake him but he's a lethal weapon out there.”
Three players
shot 7-under-par 65 and trailed Green by two strokes: Ryan Moore,
21, of Puyallup, Wash., the 2002 APL champion and 2004 NCAA Division
I individual champion; Sunghoon Kang, 17, of Korea, who was the
medalist at the 2003 U.S. Junior Amateur; and 2003 APL quarterfinalist
Luke List, 19, of Ringgold, Ga.
Anthony Kim,
18, of Norman, Okla., who earned national Freshman of the Year honors
at the University of Oklahoma this year, was three strokes back
at 66.
Matt Every,
20, a first-team All-American from the University of Florida, who
lives in Dayton Beach, was among three players who followed with
a 5-under-67. Every was a quarterfinalist at the 2003 APL.
Dayton Rose,
21, of Midwest City, Okla., the 2003 APL runner-up, finished at
3-under-par 69.
After two
days of stroke play, the field is cut to the lowest scoring 64 players.
That will be followed by five rounds of 18-hole match play. The
36-hole championship match is scheduled for July 17.
The U.S. Amateur
Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted annually
by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly
for amateurs.
