Green
Fires Record 63 At APL
Maple
Grove, Minn. — Danny Green, 47, of Jackson, Tenn., fired a
record-setting 9-under-par 63 to gain the early lead in stroke-play
qualifying at the halfway point Monday of the 2004 U.S. Amateur
Public Links Championship at Rush Creek Golf Club.
Green,
the 1999 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, who is playing in his 12th Public
Links, broke by one stroke the previous record of 64, which was
shared by three players. He tied the championship record by shooting
a 6-under-par 30 in his first nine holes. In addition, Green's 9-under-par
total for 18 tied the USGA wide mark with Chris Mundorf 's 63 in
the second round of stroke play at the 2001 U.S. Amateur.
The
USGA single-round record is a 62 posted by Christina Kim at the
2001 U.S. Girls' Junior.
“Pretty
good for an old man,” said Green, the second-oldest player in the
field. “I hit every fairway and every green, which doesn't hurt.
I'm in the books again but I'd just as soon be the last man standing,
though. They can have all the 63s.”
In
his nearly flawless round, Green, who was the runner-up at the Public
Links in 2001 and was on the 2001 USA Walker Cup team, logged seven
birdies and an eagle.
“I
didn't think it would be a birdie fest, but I'm about to change
my mind,” Green added.
In
the morning wave of play, 23 players broke par.
Sunghoon
Kang, 17, of Korea, who was the medalist at the 2003 U.S. Junior
Amateur, and 2003 APL quarterfinalist Luke List, 19, of Ringgold,
Ga., registered 7-under-par 65s to trail Green by two strokes.
Anthony
Kim, 18, of Norman, Okla., who earned national Freshman of the Year
honors at the University of Oklahoma this year, was three strokes
back at 66.
Matt
Every, 20, a first-team All-American from the University of Florida,
who lives in Dayton Beach, and Jason Kokrak, 19, of Warren, Ohio,
followed with 5-under-67s. Every was a quarterfinalist at the 2003
APL.
Dayton
Rose, 21, of Midwest City, Okla., the 2003 APL runner-up finished
at 3-under-par 69.
The
U.S. Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted
annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are
strictly for amateurs.
