2002 Champion Moore Ties 36-Hole Stroke Play Mark, Leads Stroke Play

Maple Grove, Minn. – Ryan Moore, 21, of Puyallup, Wash., the 2002 champion, tied the U.S. Amateur Public Links 36-hole record of 132 Tuesday to lead the second day of stroke play at the 2004 Championship at Rush Creek Golf Club.

Ryan Moore matched the lowest 36-hole total at the APL with a 132. The 2002 APL champion had a 67 on Tuesday to go along with Monday's 65 at Rush Creek Golf Club in Maple Grove, Minn. (USGA Photo Archives)

Moore, who won the 2004 NCAA Division I individual title while playing for Nevada-Las Vegas and was a member of the 2003 USA Walker Cup squad, posted five birdies in shooting a 67 to go along with his 7-under-par 65 in the first round to earn the "clubhouse" lead for medalist honors after the first wave of play.

"It'd be nice," Moore said of the possibility of winning medalist honors. "It wasn't what I exactly set out here to do. I wasn't going for trying to take it real low but obviously, I'm not going to step up to two-footers and try to miss them. I was hitting the ball well and I was controlling it. I gave myself a lot of short putts and was able to make them. I'll carry the confidence of playing well into match play. The tournament really starts (Wednesday)."

The 36-hole total of 132 is shared by three other players, the most recent being Jeff Overton in 2003.

Moore, who won the Sahalee Players Championship in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday and arrived in the Minneapolis area early Sunday morning after a "red-eye" flight, has scored at par or better in 33 of his last 34 competitive rounds since last October.

First-round leader Danny Green, 47, of Jackson, Tenn., who fired the lowest stroke play score in Public Links history Monday, a 9-under-par 63, had a 12:33 p.m. starting time off the 10th tee.

Chris Stroud, 22, of Groves, Texas, and a first-team All-American at Lamar University, who was the APL semifinalist in both 2002 and 2003, added a 69 to his first day's 64 and trailed Moore by one stroke.

In a positive turnaround, Daryl Fathauer, 18, of Jensen Beach, Fla., began his Tuesday round on the 10th tee and shot 42 for his first nine holes. He followed with a 30 on his second nine to tie the Public Links mark and finish with a 72. His 36-hole total of 2-over-par 146 is likely to make the cut into match play.

The Warren G. Harding Trophy for the Team Championship, for the lowest score of two 18-hole rounds from two individuals, will be awarded at the completion of stroke play.

After today's second round of stroke play, the field is cut to the lowest scoring 64 players. Then, five rounds of 18-hole match play are contested before the 36-hole championships match on July 17.

The U.S. Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
