William A. Wright

William A. Wright, of Seattle, Wash., won the Championship at the Welshire Golf Course, Denver, and thus became the first Negro to gain a national Championship conducted by the USGA. He played with two woods, nine irons, and a putter. Wright defeated Frank H. Campbell, of Jacksonville, Fla., 3 and 2, in the final.

Campbell was a professional for four years before turning to the insurance business. Wright attended Western Washington College of Education and said he hoped to be a school teacher. Chipping and putting were the strength of his game. Other semi-finalists were Don Essig, III, of Indianapolis, the 1957 Champion, and William H. McCool, of San Francisco.

The Dallas team won the sectional team Championship and the Warren G. Harding Trophy with a record score of 425. Team members were Hal McCommas, Raymond H. Patak, and Gene Towry. The entry was 2,435.
