Verne Callison

California swept the honors in the first USGA Championship ever played outside the continental United States - at the Ala Wai Golf Course in Honolulu, Hawaii. Verne Callison, 41, a tavern owner from Sacramento, Calif., won the title when he defeated Tyler Caplin, a member of the Michigan State golf team from East Lansing, Mich., by 7 and 6 in the final. Callison became the oldest Public Links Champion.

Another honor went to California when the Pasadena team won the sectional team Championship and the Warren G. Harding Trophy with a three-man score of 453 for 36 holes, four better than second-place Honolulu. Members of the Pasadena team were Harlan Stevenson, Richard Clover, and Ray Swedo, Jr. In the semi-final matches, Callison defeated Mike Andonian, of Pontiac, Mich., 1 up, and Caplin ousted Bob McMasters, of Royal Oak, Mich., 5 and 4. The entry was 2,718.
