Robert Lunn, 18, of San Francisco, defeated Stephen Oppermann, 21, of South San Francisco, by 1 up in the final at the Haggin Oaks Municipal Golf Course, Sacramento, Calif.

Richard H. Sikes' bid to become the second three-time Champion ended in the quarter-final round when he lost to Dante Vicini, 49, a glass- worker from Ottawa, Ill. Vicini won on the 19th hole after being 2 down with two to play. Sikes had won 15 consecutive matches in the Championships of 1961-62-63.

Lunn, the 12th Californian to win the title, was four under par in 134 holes of match play. He defeated Jerry Yuke, of Sacramento, by 3 and 1 in the semi-final round. Oppermann beat Viccini, 4 and 3, in the other semi-final. John Joseph, of Hayward, Calif., was medalist with 141, three under par. Seventeen players engaged in a sudden death playoff for the last four positions in match play.

The playoff required two hours for extra holes. The longest match in the Championship's history took place in the first round when Clyde Sniffen, of Everett, Wash., defeated Hung Soo Ahn, of Honolulu, the 1962 runnerup, at the 25th hole. Toledo won the team Championship with a score of 443. The winning team consisted of Hubert Farmer, Andrew Holmes, and Leonard Pietras.

PAR AND YARDAGE – Jimmie Austin/OU Golf Club will play at 7,289 yards and a par of 35-36—71. Holes 1-9 will play at 3,582 yards and par 35. Holes 10-18 will play at 3,707 yards and par 36.

ARCHITECT – Jimmie Austin/OU Golf Club was designed by Perry Maxwell and opened in 1951. A course renovation by Bob Cupp was completed in 1996.

Monday and Tuesday, July 13-14 – Stroke-play qualifying, 18 holes (field reduced to the lowest 64 players, who advance to match play).

Wednesday, July 15 — First round, match play (18 holes)

Thursday, July 16 — Second round, match play (18 holes), Third round, match play (18 holes)

Friday, July 17 — Quarterfinals, match play (18 holes), Semifinals, match play (18 holes)

Saturday, July 18 — Final, match play (36 holes)

ADMISSION – Admission is free. Tickets are not needed for this USGA championship and spectators are encouraged to attend.

COURSE SETUP – The USGA Course Rating® for the APL championship at Jimmie Austin/OU Golf Club is 75.5 and the USGA Slope Rating® is 130.

Tees, approaches and collars, height of grass – just below 0.5 inch
Fairways, height of grass – 0.5 inch
Putting greens, height of grass – 0.120 inch with a speed of 11 feet on USGA Stimpmeter
Primary Rough – 2.5 inches
