William McDonald

William McDonald, a 20-year-old college student from Topeka, Kans., reached the final round although suffering from severe blisters on his feet. One up after the morning round of the final, McDonald was rushed to a hospital for treatment; he returned to play 15 holes in one under par to defeat Dean Wilson, Jr., of Omaha, Neb., by 5 and 3. The Championship was played at the Francis A. Gross Golf Course, Minneapolis, Minn. Los Angeles won the team Championship for the eighth time, with an aggregate of 435. The medalist was Steve Oppermann, a San Franciscan who had been runner-up in 1963. Oppermann's 36 hole total was 135. Defending Champion Robert Lunn lost in the quarter-final round. For the first time, Alaska was awarded a qualifying sit and 12 players from that State entered to seek the one qualifier's place allotted.
