Verne Callison

The Amateur Public Links Championship was played at 72 holes strok play for the first time, and the changed format resulted in the oldest male Champion in USGA history, other than the Senior Amateur Champion.

Verne Callison, 48, of Sacramento, Calif., staged a spectacular finish to score 287 at the Jefferson Park Golf Course, Seattle, Wash,. and win by one stroke over Ronald Stokley, of Park Ridge, Ill.

The oldest previous USGA Champion was Jack Westland, who won the 1952 United States Amateur at 47. Callison became the fourth player to win the Championship more than once. He won previously in 1960 at 41, and even then was the oldest Public Links Champion.

At Seattle he finished birdie-par-eagle-par-three under on the last four holes. The team competition was won by Dayton, Ohio in a playoff with Atlanta after they tied with aggregate scored of 436.
