John M. Jackson

John Jackson, Jr., of Tempe, Ariz., shot 79 in the first round, then followed with scores of 70-73-70 to win by two strokes with 292. Tied for second at 294 were Art Fujita, of Honolulu; Fred Lufkin, of Spokane, Wash.; Steve Cook, of Long Beach, Calif.; and Joe Andron, Jr., of Erie, Pa.

The Championship was played over the Downing Golf Course in Erie, Pan. Jackson's victory returned the titles to the college boys, who had not won since the Championship was changed to stroke play in 1967. Jackson was a student at Arizona State University in Tempe.

With 18 holes to play, Jackson was five strokes behind Larry Zee, of Tonawanda, N.Y. Zee shot 81 and dropped out of contention. Fujita was leading with nine holes to play, but he made bogies on five of the nest seven holes.

Lufkin made a two-over-par 6 on the final hole when a par 4 would have tied Jackson. Pasadena, Calif., won the team Championship. The entry of 3,754 was the largest ever for any USGA competition.
