| Fred Haney Fred Haney, 21, won by five strokes with a score of 290 at the difficult Papago Golf Course in Pheonix in mid-July. Bob Blomberg, 26, of Alameda, Calif., was second with 295, and four other players tied for third at 297. They were Tom Olson, of Pheonix; Kenny Rucker, of Houston; Gary Balliet, of Pontiac, Mich.; and Archie Dadian, of South Milwaukee, Wis. Dadian was a former professional and the other three were college students. Haney and Blomberg were tied at 220 after 54 holes and then Haney shot 70 in the last round again 75 by Blomberg. Haney had round 74-71-75-70-290, while Blomberg shot 77-72-71-75-295. The entry reached 4,174, a record total, but for the first time since 1963 the entry for the Amateur Public Links was less than the entry for the Open Championship. The 1971 Open entry totalled 4,279. |

Amateur Public Links PAR AND YARDAGE – Jimmie Austin/OU Golf Club will play at 7,289 yards and a par of 35-36—71. Holes 1-9 will play at 3,582 yards and par 35. Holes 10-18 will play at 3,707 yards and par 36. ARCHITECT – Jimmie Austin/OU Golf Club was designed by Perry Maxwell and opened in 1951. A course renovation by Bob Cupp was completed in 1996. SCHEDULE OF PLAY: ADMISSION – Admission is free. Tickets are not needed for this USGA championship and spectators are encouraged to attend. COURSE SETUP – The USGA Course Rating® for the APL championship at Jimmie Austin/OU Golf Club is 75.5 and the USGA Slope Rating® is 130.
