Randyn Barenaba

Randyn Barenaba, 18, whose brother Charles won the Public Links Amateur Championship in 1974, kept the title in the family by defeating Allan Yamamoto on the 37th hole of the final match at the Wailua Golf Crouse on the island of Kauai.

Both finalists were from Hawaii, and the Team representing Honolulu won the Warren G. Harding Trophy Cup in three-man-team competition. Yamamoto, from Honolulu and David Ishii of Lihue, were co-medalists with 144, even par. In the final match, Barenaba was 1-up after the morning round.

He was 1-down, however, after nine holes of the afternoon round when Yamamoto, 40, scored four birdies for a medal 32 to Barenaba's 34. The next seven holes were halved, but Yamamoto was bunkered on the par-3 17th hole and bogied while Barenaba birdied.

The match was square after the scheduled 36 holes. On the extra hole, a 520-yard par 5, Barenaba pitched to within three feet of the cup and Yamamoto was 35 feet away.

He putted six feet past the hole and when he missed coming back, he conceded the birdie and the match to Barenaba. A field of 4,601 players filed entries, a record for any Championship conducted by the USGA.
