Dean Prince

Dean Prince, 40, of Santa Rosa, Calif., survived a 14-man playoff for the last 11 places in match play, and went on the win the Amateur Public Links Championship, defeating Tony Figueredo, of Miami, Fla., 5 and 3, in the final. The Championship was played at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course in Bangor, Maine. IT was the first USGA event eve played in Maine.

The medalist was Mile Campbell, of Louisville, Ky., who had 138, two under par, in the 36-hole qualifying round. He lost to Kim Hubbard in a first-round 20-hole match. Fourteen players, including Prince, had 153 totals to force a playoff for the final 11 places in the 64-player match-play draw. Prince birdied the first extra hole to qualify.

Jerry Vidovic, the defending Champion, qualified with 149, but lost in the second round to Samuel Hunt, 1 up. In the semi-final matches, Prince eliminated Dave Loeslein on the 19th hole, and figueredo defeated Doug Ward, 5 and 3. Prince led, 3-up, after the first five holes of the final match. He birdied the second and fourth holes during the stretch. Figueredo cut his deficit to one hole after the first nine.

Prince then won three holes on the second nine and took a 4-up lead at lunch. Figuered could come no closer than within three holes the rest of the match. The match ended when the 14th hole was halved in par. The Lousiville, Ky., Team of Mike Campbell, Jodie Mudd, and Vaughan Jones won the Team Championship. There were 3,929 entries, short of the record of 4,601 set in 1975.
