Bill Mayfair

Bill Mayfair, 19, of Pheonix, Arizona, defeated Jim Sorenson, the defending Champion from Bloomington, Minnesota, at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, North Carolina. Mayfair was co-medalist with Art Roberson of Zebulon, North Carolina, at one-under-par 139. Roberson was eliminated in the second round by Kevin Hayashi of Honolulu. Mayfair was extended to the 18th hole twice on his way to the final. He defeated Steve Rintoul of Eugene, Oregon, 2 and 1, in his semifinal match.

Sorenson, on the other hand, was not seriously challenged until the semifinal round, when he edged Bryan Hancock of Athens, Georgia, 1 up. In the final, Sorenson won the first hole with a par, but lost the next two to go 1 down. Sorenson leveled the match with a par at the eighth hole, but Mayfair regained the lead immediately with birdies on the ninth and 10th. Mayfair's 2-up lead lasted until he bogeyed the 21st and 22nd holes.

Birdies on the 24th, 26th, and 28th holes gave Mayfair the lead for good. He closed out the match by sinking a 33-foot birdie putt on the 34th hole, his 10th birdie in the final match. The Team Championship was won by Roberson, Larry Boswell, and Mike Taylor, who represented Clemmons, North Carolina. Their total of 279 was three better than that of the team from Tucson, Arizona. The USGA accepted 5,427 entries for the Championship.
