Kevin Johnson

Kevin Johnson, 20, of Pembroke, Massachusetts, defeated Jimmy England of Gastonia, North Carolina, 10 and 9, to win the championship at Glenview Golf Course in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The margin of victory was the second-largest in the championship's history, exceeded only by Jim Sorenson's 12-and-11 win over Jay Cooper in 1985. Garth Johnston, Eric Woods, and 1979 APL Champion Dennis Walsh shared the qualifying medal at two-under-par 142.

All three were eliminated by the quarter-finals. Johnson never trailed in the final. He won the first four holes, seven of the first nine, and held a seven-hole advantage after the morning round. He recorded seven birdies in 27 holes on the way to victory.

The San Francisco team of Frank Mazion, Rodney Wilson, and Mark Sanchez won the team title with a 289 total, four ahead of Minneapolis and five ahead of San Diego. The USGA accepted 5,501 entries for the championship.
