Warren Schutte

Warren Schutte, 20, a student at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, took a 3-up lead after 18 holes and went on the defeat Rich Mayo, of El Paso, Texas, 3 and 2, in the 36-hole final at Edinburgh USA, in Brooklyn Park, Minn.

David Berganio, the defending champion, recorded consecutive 2-under-par 70s for a 36-hole total of 140, and won medalist honors. In the first round of match play, however, Kevin Miskimins, of Reno, Nevada, birdied three of the first four holes and went on to upset Berganio, 3 and 2.

In the semifinals, Schutte, a native of South Africa and the 1991 NCAA individual champion, eliminated William Garner, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, 3 and 2, while Mayo defeated Jack O'Keefe, of Little Rock, Arkansas, 3 and 1.

The final was all square after nine holes, but Schutte took the lead for good when Mayo bogeyed the 11th. A birdie at the 13th then gave Schutte a 2 up lead Mayo got one back on the 15th, but he proceeded to drop the 16th and 17th to give Schutte a 3 up margin at the midway point. Schutte maintained that advantage through the first nine of the afternoon 18, and Mayo was never able to close the gap.

The championship attracted 6,257 entries, the most for any USGA championship ever. ESPN also broadcast live portions of the semifinals and final, making the first national television coverage of the championship.
